<p> DIED. Xavier Cugat, 90, much married bandleader who
popularized the rumba at such night spots as Los Angeles'
Cocoanut Grove and New York's Waldorf-Astoria; in Barcelona.
The dapper Spanish-born violinist conducted with his bow and
kept a shimmying singer at his side. Three of them, Carmen
Castillo, Abbe Lane and Charo, were among his five wives.
"Cugie" estimated he had spent $20 million, much of it in
alimony, but insisted his exes had remained "pals."
